Sizzlin’ Summer: Summer in Baltimore is a sensory explosion, from the scent of Old Bay-smothered steamed crabs and the taste of marshmallow-topped chocolate snoballs to the smell of Ocean City salt water mixed with sunscreen and the vision of fireflies. 5/15/2013

At the food-smelliest corner of upper Hampden/Medfield, Falls Road and 41st Street, you’ve got a Chinese joint that does a lot of American food, a pizza and sub place, and Royal Farms’ chicken shack a mere half a block away. We got a tip that the “pizza and sub place” makes the best cheese steak, and that’s how we ended up at Falls Road Carryout ordering a chicken cheese steak and a regular cheese steak, both with everything ($6.75 each). The steak was chopped on the flat grill the way it should be and wasn’t stringy; a bite revealed moist beef minus any gristle or fatty hunks. Onions were grilled just to the point of caramelization, provolone added a tang, and the foot-long sub roll was chewy, but you had to eat that big boy fast when the “everything”—mayo, lettuce, tomato, and hots—started creeping. The chicken version featured tasty chunks of grilled chicken and, really, what else do you want with chicken? Delicious. Goopy handmade rice pudding ($2.10) came correct with the right rice texture and a taste of honey, offering a cool and creamy end to the juicy, hot, and messy subs.
