City That Drinks
Drinking Games
Dreams Inn is a ringer
Published: September 11, 2012
On a recent Sunday with a hint of fall in the air, we got the itch to pitch some horseshoes. Not many downtown bars have the space to offer that opportunity, but Brooklyn’s Dreams Inn has a spacious beer garden out back, complete with a horseshoe pit. Inside they’ve got several pool tables ($3 for one hour) and one of those shuffleboard/bowling hybrids where you try to knock down pins with your puck (free). They’ve also got plenty of TVs for the kinds of games you watch—and occasional cookouts in the back for Ravens games. But on a quieter afternoon, the picnic tables are empty, save the occasional smoker, and it’s the perfect place to get your pitch on. When you show up, ask the tender for the shoes and, as long as you’re friendly and keep drinking, it is free of charge to play. They’ve been trying to get a league going, but haven’t had much luck, so for now it’s either just you and your friends or a pickup game with the locals. Either way, there’s nothing like the sound of metal on metal when you get a ringer to make your beer (Bud bottle, $2.50) taste even better.
