PJ’s Pub and Maxie’s Pizza Bar and Grill

As Johns Hopkins opens its hallowed halls to returning students, so too do the local Charles Village drinkeries. For the most part, PJ’s and Maxie’s are the go-to bars for Hopkins drinkers newly legal or old-pro (though Charles Village Pub and One World Café tend to get some of the overflow). Open since 1983, PJ’s shows its age: cracked stucco walls broken up with hardwood paneling; a framed JHU basketball jersey hangs behind a pipe, coated in dust. You feel like you’re in a well-regarded uncle’s garage. The specials for Thursday, hefty 22 oz. Miller Lites ($2.75) and Blue Moon drafts ($3.25), are perfect for the thirsty undergrad. Meanwhile, the not-quite two-year-old Maxie’s feels hipper. The “Thirsty Thursday” menu boasts glasses of Grand Marnier ($5) and fried calamari “stix” ($3.95). There is nothing especially Irish about their signature Irish trash can ($11), save for, perhaps, the staggering amount of alcohol and mixers found within (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, triple sec, Blue Curaçao, Sprite, and a strategically placed can of Red Bull on the rim). Though pricey, this bro’ed-out Long Island iced tea is a popular choice for sipping or chugging on a late Friday night, inspiring the legend hastily inscribed on the side of the men’s room stall: “I HOPE ALL YOU HOPKINS FUX DIE.”
