“Underground” sounds cool. A lot of things claim to be underground, but in reality they’re just covered with a bit of wishful dust. But Judah’s Jukejoint at the NowChild Soundstage is the real deal. It’s a boxing gym by day, and when you show up, you may still be able to catch an aspiring pugilist sparring or working the bags. At night, hopeful MCs spar with each other for the crowd’s applause (a second song requires popular assent) as the place fills up with smoke and even more sweat.
