For 43 years, the family-owned Dundalk Eagle has covered the rise and fall of the Sparrows Point steel industry, won close to 100 state, regional, and national awards for print journalism, and has had only five editors since its foundation in 1969 by Kimbel “Scoop” Oelke and his wife, Mary. The Eagle has a paid circulation of 18,000, along with 2,000 paid web subscribers. If you live in the blue-collar neighborhoods around the much-maligned Dundalk, chances are you’re a subscriber. The paper is known for its dogged coverage of the colossal fall of the former Bethlehem Steel plant, its award-winning sports stories by longtime writer Bill Gates (no, not that one), and its attention to follow-up crime stories, like the shooting of popular bar owner Lee Martin in 2009 and one of the area’s most famous cold cases, Bernadette Caruso, who walked out of Eastpoint Mall in 1986 and was never seen again. Its also invaluable when it comes to the Who’s Who at the annual Dundalk Heritage Fair.
