Best Politician, Personality

Frank Conaway Jr.

One way to be a colorful politician, one with a lot of pizzazz, is to dress the part. On the last day of the 2008 General Assembly session, state Del. Frank M. Conaway Jr. (D-40th District) showed that he knows this trick, breaking out a new baby-blue suit and purple tie to mark the occasion. While known for his standout fashion statements, there’s more to Conaway Jr. than the clothes. There are also his two books—2001’s Baptist Gnostic Christian Eubonic Kundalinion Spiritual Ki Do Hermeneutic Metaphysics: The Word, which he says provides a means to understand the Bible, and 2004’s The 20 Pennies a Day Diet Plan—and his replica kit-car business, F-Dreams Inc., which he says was killed by the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement. We’re not joking! And neither is he—even when he floats strange legislation, such as making the shillelagh, a heavy walking stick that comes in handy when a ready weapon is needed, Maryland’s official “walking stick of statesmen and gentlemen.” He’s a laugh riot with lawmaking powers, a monument to the personality cultists of the 40th District who have voted him in twice, so far. Oh, and his day job? Here’s how he describes it in his legislative biography: “Chauffeur, Municipal Post Office, City of Baltimore.” Priceless.
