Best Place to Take Out-of-Town Visitors

American Visionary Art Museum

800 Key Highway, 21230, (410) 244-1900,

Finding a place to take visiting friends and family during the day in the city can be tough. After all, what’s there to do in the Inner Harbor beyond eating and shopping? Thankfully, AVAM fills that void quite nicely, providing an afternoon’s worth of entertainment that’s family-friendly and thought-provoking for visitor and longtime resident alike. Exhibitions, like the recently wrapped-up What Makes Us Smile? curated by, among others, The Simpsons’ Matt Groening, combine fascinating historical and cultural elements with nontraditional art that is well worth the cost of admission. Plus, year-round sights like the Jim Rouse Visual Center (home to such pieces as Emily Duffy’s enormous bra ball and a downright haunting family of art-deco robots) always amaze and delight us, even after repeated visits. Trust us, if you want to show your out-of-town pals the kind of fun weirdness that makes Baltimore so great, you have to take them here.
