Sam Sessa’s “Weekend Watch”

We know, it’s supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Sam Sessa doesn’t really think it’s funny when he dresses up like Mr. Rogers and sings to us about all the fun going on in our neighborhood for his weekend events video roundup on The Baltimore Sun’s web site. He’s obviously parodying the very idea of parody when he asks us to endure his painfully cliché portrayals of pirates, British royals, circus performers, or John Waters. The metaphors he stretches to the breaking point, the purposefully poor special effects, the rudimentary acting, these are all sly jabs at similar endeavors that are actually sincerely bad, like those commercials for local car dealerships. Or are they? Either way, we have to admire the guy’s shamelessness, and we have to admit: Sessa’s “Weekend Watch” is oddly mesmerizing, kind of like watching a cat toy with a mouse. You feel for the mouse and you wish the whole thing would end, but you also secretly wonder what horrifying thing will happen next.
