Don’t sleep on Aldi, yo! While the whole store is like the bottom shelf of the supermarket cereal aisle, i.e. no-name versions of brand-name stuff, Aldi does have clearinghouse-type items too, and for dirt-cheap. Recent finds: frozen wild-caught salmon burgers for about 40 percent less than supermarket price; pouch-style natural guacamole for about half the normal price; fresh mozzarella for about 60 percent less, and artisan gourmet lettuce for 75 percent less than the exact same brand and product that was “on sale” at Safeway that same day. Cheapest eggs anywhere by far. Be prepared for a lengthy checkout though and bring your own bags.
