Service Photo

Service Photo gets the nod for staying true to the cause. Yes, you can probably emulate everything possible with film digitally, most of it fairly easily and cheaply. It’s hard to find a goddamn camera-phone pic these days that isn’t nicking some signature film style. Film, why bother? If you’ve ever spent some quality time shaking a canister full of toxic chemicals and film over a sink in a dark basement only to have a light leak or chemistry mishap somewhere in the process trash a week’s worth of photos . . . indeed, Why bother? Probably every film photographer’s answer will be a little different, but there’s something about producing an image via film, with nothing between you and the very basics of photography, that makes you feel a bit like a magician. So in a way, Hampden’s Service Photo is like Best Magic Shop too, full of people that know the ways of film and all the stuff you need to actually do it, which is sadly pretty rare these days.
