Watermelon Agua Fresca
Published: September 19, 2012
One of the best Latin food items that nobody seems to mention: agua fresca. All it is is mostly water, some sugar, and a flavoring agent, usually fresh fruit (or sometimes mix) or sometimes something herbal like hibiscus or a grain like rice, which is used in horchata. Not too sweet, just the right amount of fruitiness, and very effective at hydration. Fruit-flavored agua fresca is often available in flavors like cantaloupe, mango, or orange, but the best, the most refreshing, must be the pink one labelled “sandia,” or watermelon. The best are made from fresh watermelon, but even the ones that are borne of drink mix are astoundingly good.
