Sizzlin’ Summer: Summer in Baltimore is a sensory explosion, from the scent of Old Bay-smothered steamed crabs and the taste of marshmallow-topped chocolate snoballs to the smell of Ocean City salt water mixed with sunscreen and the vision of fireflies. 5/15/2013

Best New Salon

Laboratorie, a Salon

735 Deepdene Road, (410) 435-0805, laboratoriehair.com

The best salon can turn a gray day into one with internal sunrays, melt work stress away, and give you ramrod posture the better to highlight your new do, eyes, and cheekbones. The best salon makes you comfortable while offering what you need, not boring products you see everywhere else, and stylists that change the relationship you have with your hair. Laboratorie, opened just last November by Balance the Salon longtimers stylist Rebecca Goodman and stylist/owner Bethany Magliacane, strives “[t]o create positive change in our industry through the unity of advanced science, art, and nature, while keeping in harmony with our values and yours,” and you can see it and feel it. The place is bright, with glass, dark wood floors, cement counters, and fresh flowers from Roland Park neighbor Crimson and Clover at each station; uses the family-run Davines product line from Italy; and DJs from iPads. There is a simple lack of pretension and a friendly professionalism that’s kept us coming back more often since it’s opened than any other salon in our recent hair history.
