Alliance Comics

904 Light St., (410) 685-0021, alliancecomicsonline.com

Despite some strong competition, Alliance Comics once again gets to hold on to its pack-leader status as far as local funny-book retailers go. With its second year of operation well underway, Alliance isn’t content to rest on its laurels: The owners have impressively expanded the Federal Hill storefront to accommodate more activities such as tabletop gaming and special-release parties (if you stopped by the store at midnight on Aug. 31, you got yourself a free copy of DC’s brand-new, hot-off-the-presses Justice League No. 1). When it comes down to it, Alliance gets the nod from us because it recognizes the need to engage the locals. Everything from the sale fliers to the Facebook page says that these guys are excited about comics and, whether they’re sponsoring Super Art Fight events or promoting Rockville’s annual Small Press Expo, they’re going to try and get you excited too.
