The Safeway on North Charles is, well, a Safeway. You’re not going to be blown away by their meat and produce selection, but they’re your most convenient option for grocery shopping when you live in Charles Village. Luckily, this seemingly unassuming supermarket boasts a secret weapon in the form of checkout clerk Gilbert Carroll. With his soft-spoken demeanor and well-timed sass, Gilbert makes that regular pilgrimage to pick up milk and eggs a joy. It’s little things like asking you about your day or if you need help carrying your bags out to the car that make him such a well-known and well-liked member of the Charles Village community. If you want to experience checkout lane magic for yourself, Gilbert tends to work Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and on the weekend.
