Seriously, anyone who doesn’t live in East Baltimore needs to petition right now to get one of these in his or her neighborhood. And anyone who does live in East Baltimore and hasn’t been here yet, prepare yourself for some serious Safeway hatin’. Though there is a general Latin bent in the offerings here, the Market has recently begun seriously expanding its selection of Middle Eastern, Indian, and Asian products as well. The “International” aisle at a typical supermarket means La Choy chow mein noodles and maybe some matzo. Here, it’s a huge expanse of genuinely foreign stuff, everything from Korean ramen to canned baba ghanouj to jars of ghee, and a selection of dried legumes and spices that rivals any Indo-Pak market. The produce is similarly diverse, and really cheap—like, often a third or half the price of the exact same thing at the aforementioned chain supermarket down the street. It has Halal chicken and many unusual cuts of pork, but steaks and seafood are weak points. Pro tip: Check out the crazy flavors of powdered beverages.
