Once upon a time, this Hampden pet-supply shop went by the name Chow, Baby! which lasted until the Nestl? Purina PetCare Company busted on the friendly independent neighborhood retailer, claiming ownership over the word “chow.” Chow, as in “food.” Well, as of 2008, it’s Howl, which is a better name anyway. And chances are slim you’re gonna find a Purina product—like ALPO—in Howl, not out of spite, but because Howl specializes in the good stuff: nutritionally proper pet food minus the chemicals, fillers, and all-around crap that winds up in so much of what goes into big-name chow. Our buddy gets Taste of the Wild, and not just because it has a cool name. Also note that prices here, unlike a good number of pet “boutiques,” are more in line with what you’d find at a PetSmart. You, average person that loves his or her dog, can afford it.
