Martin’s Flea Market

2800 Eastern Blvd., Middle River, (240) 508-1535

We recently discovered Martin’s Flea Market while driving to Gunpowder Falls State Park. We nearly missed the flea market sign, turned around, and pulled into the vast and mostly empty Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant parking lot. A couple of signs led us to Plant No. 2 on the eastern side of the old factory. Once inside, we weren’t exactly bowled over by the vastness. But a couple of circuits around the high-ceilinged room changed our first impression. This was more like an honest-to-goodness swap meet, with booths full of interesting and fun items. Nowhere did we find the usual collection of off-the-trailer-truck stuff like the tube socks, sunglasses, and nearly expired packaged foods that overwhelm typical flea markets. What Martin’s lacked in vastness—admittedly, nothing in this area compares to the town-sized flea markets in Texas and Florida—it makes up for in intimacy, seller camaraderie, and just plain coolness. Plus it has a great back-story: Martin’s was started by three friends who were laid off when the recession hit the construction business. Definitely worth a U-turn on Eastern Boulevard.
