Michelle’s Caf?

Michelle’s may be known for its tamales, but we stop by the tiny Eastern Avenue storefront for the tortas. Delicious, overstuffed tortas. A torta is usually grilled, but Michelle’s uses convection ovens. That’s not a complaint—we love greasy street food as much as anyone—but for a workday lunch, a relatively healthier torta bodes well for a more productive afternoon. Whatever the choice—chicken breast, chorizo, Oaxaca cheese—the telera bread is delightfully crispy, and perfectly complements the avocado and refried black-bean spreads. Throw on a slice of tomato, some lettuce, and pickled hot peppers, grab a Mexican Coke to wash it down, and you’re set. Perfect.
