Best Place to Eat Alone: Atwaters Soup Counter in Belvedere Square

Best Place to Eat Alone

Atwater’s soup counter in Belvedere Square

529 E. Belvedere Ave., (410) 323-2396, atwaters.biz

Eating at this soup counter—arguably the main hub of Belvedere Market—is like going to a bar by yourself, but better. Bring a book, magazine, or copy of City Paper to disguise the fact that you’ll be people-watching for the duration of your lunch. The bustling marketplace attracts a mix of yuppies, college students and professors, and neighborhood types. Servers are affable and attentive. Soups are constructed, ingredient by ingredient, behind a glass pane at the counter, affording lunchtime entertainment. All that, sans the awkwardness of eating solo.
