Best Peruvian Chicken: Chicken Rico

Best Peruvian Chicken

Chicken Rico

3728 Eastern Ave., (410) 522-2950, chickenricobaltimore.com

Chicken Rico is like one of those long-reigning champs, so dominant and on top of the game that even if you’re a fan, you kinda find yourself rooting for the underdog once in a while. So when we overheard someone in a bar saying they were leaving to check out a place “that Scott swears is better than Chicken Rico,” we chugged our beers and proceeded to stalk them (from a safe distance). Turns out Scott didn’t know mierda about pollo a la brasa. Said place was strictly JV, posing no threat to Chicken Rico’s utter supremacy. CR chicken is well broiled with a properly smoky and tender skin, but always moist, even the white meat. Few places can pull this off reliably. The seasoning is heavy and evenly distributed, also a rarity. The sides, especially the fried rice, are above average. Most importantly the crucial spicy green sauce is superior to any other we’ve ever tried. And there’s no “it’s good—for Baltimore” qualification here. Chicken Rico stands up to any place in the mid-Atlantic.
