Sizzlin’ Summer: Summer in Baltimore is a sensory explosion, from the scent of Old Bay-smothered steamed crabs and the taste of marshmallow-topped chocolate snoballs to the smell of Ocean City salt water mixed with sunscreen and the vision of fireflies. 5/15/2013

Best Indian: Pavan Foods

8904 Harford Road, pavanfoods.com, (410) 663-3201

When a place like Pavan Foods opens in a city like New York or Los Angeles, it takes about two weeks before it’s overrun by hipster foodies in search of the next great hole-in-the-wall monument to authentic ethnic cuisine. But lucky for us, we’re in Baltimore, so Pavan Foods has remained under the radar for years even though it serves some of the city’s best (and cheapest) all-vegetarian Indian food. Granted, the strip mall storefront doesn’t look like much, and the inside atmosphere won’t wow you either: it’s half-Indian grocery store, half-cafeteria. But you’re not here for the decor. The menu features some familiar palak/aloo/paneer main-course staples, but the smart bet is to go wild with the South Indian dosa, chaat, and other small dishes on offer. Or just let the nice woman working the cash register pick for you; she won’t steer you wrong.
