Falafel must be fresh and it must be crispy and it must be flavorful—but above all, it must be cheap. Hampden’s King’s, the slightly-fancier Middle Eastern annex of King’s Pizza and Subs, understands that there’s no shame in embracing falafel’s street-food roots. Their sandwich is nothing fancy, but all the crucial parts are done right: the crunchy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside chickpea balls; the creamy drizzle of tahini; the hot sauce’s extra kick. And they get bonus points for their fresh-baked pita. Yes, it’ll be overstuffed. Yes, you’ll probably make a mess while eating it. And yes, it costs less than five dollars.
