The bloody mary has become the liquid version of the chicken wing, with everyone trying to make theirs the booziest or the spiciest, ending up with a too-heavy pour lying at the bottom of a fiery, undrinkable mix. If we wanted a double-shot of vodka with a shot of Old Bay-dusted Tabasco-back, we would have ordered it. The bloody mary also frequently occurs far too early the day after a big night, when we’re still a little tentative in terms of dealing with solid food, and that’s where the master mixologists at Mama’s on the Half Shell come to our aid, with a bountiful Bloody garnished with colossal olives, tangy pickled green beans, and two kinds of citrus, lemon and lime—a festive, healthful alco-salad in service of a perfectly peppery mary mix, with a nice celery taste, that imparts just enough of a spicy bite with just the right amount of life-giving morning-after vodka to fire up our appetite. Well, at least for another round.
