Heron family in Fells
Published: September 19, 2012
You know that old, run-down-looking pier that doesn’t quite connect up to dry land in Fells? The one that’s now covered in vegetation? Well, especially in the mornings or at dusk, and especially if it’s raining lightly, you might glimpse a bird—a big-ass bird, much larger than the more common geese or cormorants in the vicinity—alight onto the very end of that pier and just chill for a couple hours. That, friends, is a great blue heron, our state bird, in case you didn’t know. And this past summer, a juvenile heron was sighted at the very same spot, implying perhaps an entire family of herons that are, if not residents of Fells, at least frequent visitors, there long enough to complain about the noise on weekends.
