Sure you couldn’t get a decent cup of coffee there, but there was something about watching Opie trundle down to the fishin’ hole that made Mayberry seem pretty good. Well Bob Wall and the good folks at Baltimore City Recreation and Parks have brought Mayberry to Mobtown. Head over to the pond in Patterson Park the first Thursday of each month from April to October, from 5 P.M. till dusk, for Family Fishing. Rods and bait are provided (with a special nod to Tochterman’s Fishing Tackle on Eastern Avenue, who supplies all the night crawlers you can drown), and fishing-license requirements are waived. Can’t make Thursdays? Take the kids down to the Fishing Rodeo the last Saturday in October for fish putt putt, fish puppets, and, of course, fishing! The pond is full of rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and bluegill. It’s a blast for kids and definitely beats actually living in Mayberry.
