Best Side Effect of the Baltimore Grand Prix
Repaved roads
Published: September 21, 2011
Forget for a moment the broader debate of whether it was a financial and PR victory for the city or a nationally televised white elephant that lined the pockets of a select few thanks to a kick-in from Joe Average Taxpayer. On top of the general weirdness of an event called the “Baltimore Grand Prix,” especially one that doesn’t involve bowling or perhaps an epic bar crawl, is the fact that it was a road race, i.e. required driving on our streets, which boast some of the most scarred, cracked, pothole-ridden, and generally unkempt surfaces of any major city. All the bumps, gouges, and divots could have been left in to make for a sort of “hard-core” mode, but instead the powers that be pussed out and did the unthinkable: roadwork. It’s almost unnerving to drive down Light Street and not have to spit out a filling afterward. Kind of makes up for the gnarly traffic, which in reality wasn’t that bad. And while the possibility that the fixes were just slapdash patch jobs certainly exists, shit, we’ll take what we can for now.
