Leakin Park Train Sundays
Published: September 21, 2011
It’s likely you had forgotten how much you loved trains till you took your little one to the B&O Museum or a train garden around the holidays. On second Sundays of every month from April to November, pack a picnic lunch and head over to Leakin Park, where you and your train-loving tyke(s) can ride a 3,200-plus-foot track pulled by a one-eighth-scale locomotive. The Chesapeake and Allegheny Live Steamers train club operates beautiful, faithful (but wee) reproductions of locomotives that worked the mid-Atlantic region during the heady days of locomotive commerce—some are so faithful they are actually coal-fired. Chat up the engineers while waiting to leave the station; most are happy to describe their love for locomotives. In fact, we wished more people loved trains enough to demand them as a primary source of transportation. But that’s another essay.
