Rocks State Park

3318 Rocks Chrome Hill Road, Jarrettsville, (410) 557-7994, dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/rocks.asp

Sure we were a bit bummed when the park service started keeping people out of the super-fun but admittedly a bit sketchy rapids area of Deer Creek at Rocks State Park. Fortunately there’s plenty of shoreline to go around. Upstream holds a good number of river eddies and elbows isolated enough to have a satisfying afternoon of soaking and pretending you slipped away to backwoods West Virginia for the day. At Falling Branch, a park annex a little ways up the road, you’ll find Kilgore Falls pouring 30 feet, making it the state’s second-highest waterfall, into a nice pool as well. Rocks also has some of the best close-in hiking trails around Baltimore, so you can get all overheating before cooling off. Tubing here is, of course, aces.
