The business of America might be business, but oftentimes that doesn’t make it any easier for an average Joe—or even Joe College—to invest the time, energy, and acumen to cut through the self-interested salesmanship that drives most business stories. This is especially so when it comes to the complexities of, say, energy-company mergers, bond ratings, defense contracting, or public subsidies for real estate development. The Baltimore Sun’s financial columnist, Jay Hancock, slices through the intricacies of these and other stories, helping readers make sense of them, sometimes by taking sides, but often simply by laying out the stakes in clear, concise terms. He’s a facile cipher of the holy grail of finance, and, given the ways powerful interests tend to spin such narratives to sell their sides of the stories, that’s mighty helpful.
