Best Asshole Move

Dumping Todd Heap

Sure, Brian Billick condemned us to four years of Kyle “Trip Over Own Feet and Throw Pick While Curling Into Fetal Ball” Boller, but hey, Billick led the Ravens to their only Superbowl victory and really wasn’t a bad guy, and even his critics were a bit surprised by the less-than-respectful manner in which he was let go in 2007 by an organization that has a rep for looking out for its own. So it’s pretty surprising there hasn’t been more squawk about Todd Heap, our own stormin’ Mormon, a career Raven, crowd favorite, and freaking workhorse who played through injuries for much of his career (thanks in no small part to his utter fearlessness in laying out for the ball in the middle of the field). But he never complained, just sucked it up and kept going like the pro he was, and that didn’t change when Ozzie Newsome decided to release a totally unsuspecting Heap—over the phone. Yes, it was strictly a business decision necessitated by salary-cap issues, but Heap deserved better than a phone call out of the blue. He managed to get a two-year contract from Arizona, so that’s good, but if it was up to us we would’ve at least treated the guy to a steak for all he’s done for Baltimore football.
