Best Solo Art Show: Dustin Carlson, Cowboys and Engines

Best Solo Art Show

Dustin Carlson, Cowboys and Engines

Dustin Carlson’s solo show at Gallery Four, Cowboys and Engines, is the first resident solo show the gallery has presented. Carlson’s talents and efforts, usually reserved to running a museum-quality gallery and producing custom projects in his fabrication shop, were focused to create a body of work that filled all three rooms of Gallery Four’s massive space. With the ability to build and create anything he imagines, Carlson imposed a self-limiting theme of the manufactured American West. Steel billboard frames with spacious Western landscapes border the first gallery. Car-seat benches are arranged in the center of the space. As you move through the space, two old-fashioned, hand-made gas pumps face off, nozzles in their holders like pistols in holsters. An ice-machine oasis faces mechanized, rattling truck exhaust pipes, and a herd of kinetic oil pumps fills the back room. Carlson’s work juxtaposes consumerism and classic Americana at every turn.
