With This Bird’s Flown: a Travest of Antiquity, Dionysus bartender Alex Hacker proved he’d been touched by the Greek god of drama. His voice emerged as a powerful mix of naturalism and poeticism, bringing together the themes and characters of Greek tragedy and the idioms of Tarantino, Mamet, and the new auteurs of long-form television drama. The play’s few missteps had to do more with dramaturgy and casting than writing, and we hope to see Hacker—who also played the lead with surprising aplomb—back with new work next year.
