Best Music Festival

There are bigger festivals—Artscape—and weirder festivals—Transmodern— but this year Scapescape was the music festival. Over 75 bands played over a four-day period, and there wasn’t a lot else to distract you. It had what is best about all festivals: music, food, and a chance to hang out and talk with your friends. It enlivened the entire Station North district and made it feel like New Orleans or New York or something—except better, because it was Baltimore. You could finish watching J. Roddy Walston and the Business on the outdoor stage and walk a block or so to catch the Get ’Em Mamis in the Windup Space. With a supergroup that included Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner covering the entirety of Guided By Voices classic Bee Thousand, and a supremely weird and awesomely alienating set by veteran rapper Labtekwon (who liberally employed an air horn), it was full of surprises and supremely festive. We hope we’re wrong, but Scapescape may never be this great again.
