The artist formerly known as Dappa!!! Dan Midas has already gone through many phases in his brief career: a wisecracking battle-rap champ; a clever and increasingly idiosyncratic lyricist during his stint with Mania Music Group; a club-rap party-starter with an Unruly Records co-sign; and now as an openly gay man who’s comfortable making hip-hop as hard or as soft as he damn-well pleases. The only constant through it all has been his undeniable talent and charisma, captured more than ever on this year’s Winter and the Tinman’s Heart EP. His next release, The OMAR Tape, puts an appropriate twist on the nods to HBO’s The Wire that all local rappers love to make, casting DDm as the musical equivalent of Omar Little: a West Baltimore badass who you’d be unwise to disrespect, regardless of what you think of his sexual orientation.
