Chris Berry, Sean Gray, and Tracy Soo-Ming’s imprint would’ve won our hearts if it had only released Roomrunner’s self-titled 2011 cassette and Super Vague EPs, which contain enough impudent noise and insouciant melodies to make us think it’s 1989 even if we’re not holding a Hamm’s in one hand and smoking indoors with the other. But Fan Death also had the impeccable taste to put out a cassette release for Atlanta black-metal band berchrist; a live cassette from Woollen Kits, who hail from Melbourne but whose jangly garage rock is pure New Zealand; and the monolithic The Clearing LP from Locrian, the sort of all-in plunge into ambient doom that Southern Lord and Type Records usually dish out. Berry recently moved to Brooklyn, leaving only Gray in the mid-Atlantic area, making this the last time we can call Fan Death a local label.
