Many theatrical experiences promise to take you on a journey; very few actually pull it off. The more than 40 artists who collaborated with the Copycat Theater to create the 22 compact rooms spread over two buildings during the 2011 Transmodern Festival not only took you on a physical journey, but crossed that barrier in the brain that lets the imagination seep into your digestion of reality. The “play” itself, purportedly a grandiose metaphorical exploration of immigration and alienation, didn’t always have a cohesive throughline, but what it lacked in narrative continuity it more than made up for in hallucinatory visual splendor. Rooms Play became a theater experience whose imagery branded itself into the eyeballs as indelibly as moments from favorite movies and visual artworks, and often worked its way under consciousness’ skin through the ephemeral logic found most often in dream states and, well, hour five after dropping a few microdots.
