Let’s face it: Four hours is a long time to sit through any double feature, especially one that doesn’t include women in prison or a heroine named Ilsa. But when the Baltimore Rock Opera Society unrolled its double bill this spring, it smartly loaded up its second half with a genuine hoot of a sci-fi production, The Terrible Secret of Lunastus, which followed a group of human astronauts as they encountered an alien species on another planet—complete with the BROS’ typically cheeky 1970s rock excesses and overblown sense of wit. Lifelong nerds could recognize what Lunastus was before the first of many laser beams found its target: the sort of low-tech sci-fi adventure of the original Star Trek series with everything turned up to 11. And so it delivered: strangers in a strange land being confronted with their own humanness (or lack thereof); considerations of the line separating human from computer intelligence; hot intergalactic-species sex; and, in actor Tim Olewnik as the rock opera’s captain, a performer who not only isn’t afraid of the William Shatner School of Overacting but very well may be a former valedictorian. In plain, non-Vulcan English: a hoot.
