Power Moves Forever Quest

If you get right down to it, only one thing genuinely binds Baltimore’s creative community. It’s not just “quirkiness” or “experimental” or “DIY,” or any of those other easy categories that try to ghettoize Baltimore art as purely the niche provenance of outsiders, so-called visionaries, and/or otherwise weirdos. Sure, we’ve got those—but what sincerely unites Baltimore’s multifarious arts communities is the utter lack of that often crippling fear of failure. Here, no idea is too wild, no ambition is out of reach, no obstacle can’t be overcome by a group of motivated and creative individuals who want to create something beautiful and amazing. And the best example of that bulletproof spirit this year came in the form of dancer/choreographer Claire C?t?’s painstakingly realized Power Moves Forever Quest. A narrative dance piece that took its structural, visual, and auditory cues from the language of adventure video games, Forever delivered a serious jolt of eye-dropping what-the-fuck? to the 2011 Transmodern Festival, which traffics in WTF as reliably as Rick Perry needs hair product. The production didn’t always make sense if you weren’t video-game savvy, but good googly moogly: Nothing else quite like it exists.
