Multicult’s Spaces Tangled
Published: September 19, 2012
Sleeping Giant Glossolalia
The Big Black and Amphetamine Reptile comparisons that have followed this local trio around since this beast of a release dropped in May only partially capture the group’s feral sound. Yes, Multicult—bassist Rebecca Burchette, drummer Jake Cregger, and guitarist/vocalist Nick Skrobisz—delivers the sort of low-end throb and guitar abuse that the late 1980s and early 1990s Midwestern bands damn-near perfected. But the songs on Spaces Tangled are also strafed with melody beneath the tumult, and cuts such as “Under Arrest” and “Groteske” seduce as much as they pummel the ears.
