Best Club Music Producer

DJ Pierre has cleverly placed his skittering, left-field take on Baltimore club music in the center of a hip, of-the-moment dance scene that for the most part left club music behind for even more obscure genres a few years ago. His remix of M.I.A.’s “Steppin’ Up” appeared on the Vicki Leekx mixtape; “You Don’t Bang Wit Me,” a collaboration with local rapper TT the Artist, snuck onto quite a few online mixes; and he’s got a very cool back and forth going with Los Angeles production duo Nguzunguzu, remixing their song “Mirage” and having his voice sampled on their Timesup EP. All the while, he’s maintained his staggering productivity, releasing two volumes of ThEEEE MiXtApEEEE and the usual stream of radio-rap club remixes. Some producers in the city still think there’s a chance to go pop, while others are content to simply keep the club-music tradition going, but Pierre inches club further into the nebulous world of global dance and bass music, keeping the city’s homegrown dance music mutating.
