Best Drinking Plan

The Wharf Rat Mug Club

801 S. Ann St., (410) 276-8304, thewharfrat.com

The Wharf Rat in Fells Point serves “imperial pints” of beer, meaning 20-ounce drafts rather than the standard 16 ounces. The extra four ounces of beer-drinking pleasure is nice, but if you join the Wharf Rat’s Mug Club, you get yet another four ounces every time their barkeeps pull you one. And you get it in a 24-ounce heavy ceramic mug that holds the brew’s coldness much longer than a glass does. On Mondays, Mug Club members get these extra-large servings at a bargain price, $4.50, and they get a free fill upon joining and on their birthdays. It’s a lifetime membership, costs $75 (which pays for itself more quickly the more often you drink there), and gives you an added incentive to go there regularly to enjoy the well-curated selection of tapped beers and hand-pulled cask ales. More than 400 beer-lovers have joined since the club started in 1998, and judging by the large number of mugs in play on any given visit, many of them take this drinking plan to heart. During winter, the warm pull of the Wharf Rat’s 12-foot fireplace is often enough to call a visit to mind, but as a Mug Club member, you’ll likely already be there.
