To clarify: Best DJ in a club here doesn’t mean Best Club Music DJ, nor does it mean straight-up Best DJ. The Best DJ in a Club is the guy that you can go to a place and see on the regular, as nebulous as that still probably is. James Nasty, who co-runs the Physical Education party at the Ottobar, has the sort of wide-ranging appeal that few in Baltimore even attempt: DJing the rock club for a mash of yuppies, hipsters, and heads. His mixtape from early this year, The Truth About James Nasty, is both era-spanning and genre-spanning in a way that stays coherent, natural, and earnest—and underscores his naturalness at being a DJ for the people.
