Best Bar to Drink Alone and Not Get Hit On

Dougherty’s Pub

223 W. Chase St., (410) 752-4059, doughertyspub.com

Some of us working young females enjoy a pint or two post-working, whether or not we’ve got company. Hell, sometimes we prefer not to have company—the bar atmosphere, a good book or journal, and friendly patrons who can make small talk combine for a perfect way to forget. Nowhere caters to this need better than Mount Vernon’s Dougherty’s Pub, a unique combination of Irish bar and dive that doesn’t try too hard at being Irish or gimmicky. In fact, it doesn’t try too hard at much of anything except being friendly. The beer selection’s solid and ranges from cheap to pricey; the food is tasty and simple (nachos, burgers and chips, etc.). Happy hourish is the best time to go. It’s dead enough that the bartenders have time to chat you up, but busy enough that there’s always someone to talk to if your book gets old. Bonus: We’ve never been without meeting a fiftysomething working gent or two who insist on buying at least one of our drinks, expecting nothing more in return than an ear for their Baltimore nostalgia. We’ve often left with no tab, a good buzz, and a friendly tip of a cap.
